EMDR Therapy in Kansas City &

Some things don’t get better by just talking about them

You've probably already tried to think your way through it. Journaled it, analyzed it, talked it through more times than you can count. And it's still there. Still gets triggered by things that “shouldn't” be a big deal. Still runs the show more than you'd like to admit.

That's not a sign you're doing something wrong. It's usually a sign the memory needs a different kind of processing than talk therapy alone can offer. That's where EMDR comes in.

What Is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, which sounds a lot more clinical than it feels in practice. Here's the simple version: your brain has a natural ability to process and file away experiences. But painful or overwhelming ones sometimes get stuck instead, and that stuck memory keeps resurfacing as anxiety, self-doubt, overreaction, or a feeling you can't quite shake even when nothing is technically wrong right now.

EMDR helps your brain finish what it was already trying to do. Using bilateral stimulation (guided eye movements or tapping that engage both sides of the brain), we revisit the stuck memory in a way that feels far more manageable than simply talking about it. You don't have to fully understand the mechanism for it to work. Most of my clients didn't either, and it changed things for them anyway.

What EMDR Can
Help With

  • Trauma, whether from a single event or years of accumulated experiences

  • Anxiety that hasn't responded to talk therapy alone

  • Self-critical thought patterns that feel stuck on repeat

  • Triggers or reactions that feel
    out of proportion

  • Difficult memories that still carry a
    charge, even years later

Why EMDR Over
Traditional Talk Therapy

Talk therapy is valuable, but some experiences live in the nervous system in a way words alone don't fully reach. EMDR works directly with how those experiences are stored in the brain, which is why people often move through things in EMDR that months of conversation hadn't touched. Most people are surprised by how different they feel afterward, not because anything was erased, but because it's finally filed away where it belongs: in the past, where it can't run the present anymore.

EMDR, Done Virtually

I offer EMDR exclusively through telehealth, from the privacy of your own home. Research supports that EMDR delivered virtually is as effective as in-person, and for many clients, being in a familiar space actually makes the work easier to access.
